Short-term power markets grow by 4.6% on year

GB Day-Ahead volume increases by 27.5%

Amsterdam / Bern / Brussels / Leipzig / London / Paris / Vienna, 05 May 2020. In April 2020, a total volume of 50.4 TWh was traded on EPEX SPOT’s Day-Ahead and Intraday power markets (April 2019: (48.2 TWh), representing an increase of 4.6% on year.

Day-Ahead markets

In April 2020, power trading on the Day-Ahead markets on EPEX SPOT accounted for 42,013,825 MWh (April 2019: 40,422,749 MWh). The trading volume on the GB market increased by 27.5% on year.

Prices in Central Western Europe, connected within the Multiregional Coupling, converged 32% of the time (April 2019: 54%).

Intraday markets

On the EPEX SPOT Intraday markets, a total volume of 8,362,062 MWh was traded in April 2020 (April 2019: 7,737,339 MWh). This represents a year-on-year growth of 8.1%. The German Intraday auction reached a new record with 740,167 MWh traded. On the Austrian, French and German Intraday markets, flexibility products, namely 30 minute and 15 minute contracts, displayed healthy growth rates.

In April, cross-border trades matched between EPEX SPOT members represented 17.2% of the total continuous Intraday volume. 15 minute contracts represented 16.6% of the volume traded on the German, Austrian, Swiss, Dutch and Belgian continuous Intraday markets.
