Power Trading Results in August 2014 - August volumes surge to 1 TWh daily, 8% year-on-year

Paris / Leipzig / Bern / Vienna, 1st September 2014. In August 2014, a total volume of 31.1 TWh was traded on EPEX SPOT’s Day-Ahead and Intraday markets (August 2013: 28.8 TWh). This is the best August volume ever recorded on EPEX SPOT’s markets and corresponds to an increase of 8% year-on-year. August 2014 saw a daily average of more than 1 TWh of traded volume, a growth that has been observed on EPEX SPOT’s markets for several months since the beginning of the year. All market segments have contributed to this development.

Day-Ahead markets

In August 2014, power trading on the Day-Ahead auctions on EPEX SPOT accounted for a total of 28,581,300 MWh (August 2013: 26,755,356 MWh) and can be broken down as follows:

Prices within the German and the French market, both coupled within the Multi-Regional Coupling, converged 41% of the time. 

Intraday markets

On the EPEX SPOT Intraday markets, a total volume of 2,510,167 MWh was traded in August 2014 (August 2013: 2,027,165 MWh).

In August, cross-border trades represented 16.1% of the total Intraday volume. The volume in 15-minute contracts on the German and Swiss Intraday markets reached another all-time high and climbed to 487,807 MWh. It is a 3% increase from the previous record in July 2014 (475,658 MWh). In August, they represented 20.9% – more than one fifth – of the volume traded on the German and Swiss Intraday markets.
