What we do: Organising wholesale electricity markets
Electricity is the key commodity of the 21st century. It propels businesses and industries; it spends light, interconnection and warmth for end consumers – and has become a driver of decarbonised mobility. However, electricity is difficult to store, so production and consumption need to be balanced on the grid at any given point of time.
This is where EPEX SPOT comes in: we operate the wholesale organised market for power trading. Electricity producers, suppliers, grid operators, financial institutions, trading companies, aggregators and industrial consumers place their sell and buy orders on our markets. We then match the aggregated supply and demand, in auctions and continuously, from hourly to 15-minute products.
We contribute to the transformation and decarbonisation of the energy sector and beyond.
By doing so, we create price signals which trigger decisions on all levels of the power system. We optimise electricity flows across Europe. And we contribute to the transformation and decarbonisation of the energy sector via markets and contracts that foster the increasing integration of renewables.
